SLOW COOKER CABBAGE AND SAUSAGE

Sausage and cabbage are among the most satisfying and delicious combinations I’ve ever had. I’ve cooked sausage and cabbage together in various ways before. However, I wanted to try them in a slow cooker to determine whether this simple, hands-free cooking method could work. What’s the verdict? It’s good! The combination of sausage and cabbage made in a slow cooker turns into a tender, brothy (almost similar to the soup of sausage and cabbage) and delicious.

POTATO OPTIONS

I used baby creamer potatoes since they were simple and didn’t require cutting. However, you can also use white potatoes and Yukon gold potatoes cut into 1-inch pieces. Russet potatoes are likely to break up a bit, too, for this recipe.

HOW TO SEASON CABBAGE AND SAUSAGE

My recipe intended to make it as easy as possible, so I added only a few tablespoons of spice mix for steak (a big mixture of salt pepper, garlic, and the red variety of pepper). It is also possible to use something similar to Cajun seasoning or something as simple as a pinch of salt pepper, paprika seedseds.

HOW TO SERVE CABBAGE AND SAUSAGE

I poured the sausage, cabbage potatoes, sausage, and broth into a bowl and looked at it as a brothy bowl (not much of a soup, but not too dry). However, you can use a slotted spoon and take the broth out. Whatever you decide to do, a slice of crusty bread with butter and a side dish will make this the perfect comfort food.

INGREDIENTS

1.5 lb. babies potatoes ($2.99)

One onion yellow ($0.32)

1/2 head of chopped cabbage (5-6 cups) ($1.14)

Two teaspoons seasoning for steak ($0.20)

14 oz. smoked sausage ($2.79)

2 cups chicken broth ($0.26)

One tablespoon chopped parsley (optional garnish) ($0.10)

INSTRUCTIONS

Cut the onion into pieces of 1-inch. Place the baby potatoes and the onion in the middle of a 5-quart or larger slow cooker.

Cut the cabbage into pieces of 1-inch. Add the chopped cabbage and seasonings for steak to the slow cooker.

Cut your sausage into 1/2-inch rounds. The link is added to the slow cooker, along together with chicken broth. Mix it up until you can get the link into the cabbage. It’s OK if the broth doesn’t cover all the ingredients.

Put the lid on your slow cooker, then cook at the high setting for four hours or on low for 8 hours.

Mix the mixture to mix the ingredients when you have finished 4 hours at high or eight hours at low temperature. Check the seasonings and adjust them to your taste. Serve with chopped parsley. If you like, serve it hot.
